Supermarkets take extreme measures to tackle theft
A good example of this problem is France, where a well-known supermarket chain bought more than 500 shopping trolleys and had none of them left by the end of the following year. This has led them to take exceptional measures such as requiring the presentation of identification in order to use the trolleys.
In Spain we do not have detailed figures on trolley theft, but we do have figures on shrinkage: 54% of financial losses in supermarkets come from the theft of trolley contents and of food and drink products.
Large companies have adopted our anti-theft system for supermarkets, which use a wheel with sensors and a braking mechanism that is activated when you try to take the trolley out of permitted areas, such as the supermarket or car park.
