THE ENTRANCE MAT: SAVINGS, SAFETY AND BRAND IMAGE IN A SINGLE ELEMENT

felpudo

The safety of a retail establishment does not begin in the aisles, but at the entrance. Managing this correctly is the difference between efficient operations and a history of avoidable claims.

The real issue is not the flooring itself, but the management of access points. Falls in supermarkets are not isolated incidents; they are recurring situations that often lead to claims, penalties and substantial compensation payments.

In recent years, several court rulings have awarded compensation exceeding £25,000 for serious falls, as well as imposing penalties for wet floors or poor maintenance. Even accidents occurring strictly within entrance areas have resulted in compensation payments of more than £10,000. These figures highlight an undeniable reality: the risk exists and, in most cases, it could have been avoided.

When the entrance (to the store) becomes the risk

When analysing these incidents, one recurring pattern emerges: slippery entrance areas. A large proportion of accidents occur at access points or on surfaces affected by moisture and dirt. This is not an isolated phenomenon, but a structural failure in environmental control.

Every person entering the establishment brings in water, dust and debris. Without an effective containment system from the very first step, dirt spreads throughout the store, significantly increasing the likelihood of slips and falls.

The conventional response is often to intensify cleaning or increase the frequency of inspections. However, these measures are reactive; they only act once the problem is already inside and the risk is real.

The strategy starts at the door: how to prevent the problem from entering the store

The key lies in the strategic management of the entrance area. Access points are not merely passageways; they are critical control points where it is decided what enters the store. A poorly designed entrance transfers the problem indoors, directly affecting safety, operational efficiency and the image customers perceive of the brand.

Entrance mats are technical management tools. Their primary function is to capture dirt and absorb moisture before they are spread throughout the premises. However, in order to achieve optimum performance, they must be correctly sized and positioned according to actual customer flow and the specific needs of the retail environment.

It is not about cleaning more. It is about preventing the problem from entering in the first place. Because whatever is not intercepted at the door ultimately compromises the safety of the entire store.
